Why is it important to understand immigration status if you are not an immigration lawyer?

If you are working in a frontline service in Newham, a large proportion of the people that you encounter on a daily basis will experience problems related to their immigration status.

It can be difficult to know what to ask and what to do to help people, particularly as immigration status can be a sensitive issue. 

This short training will help you:

• To have a better understanding of the most common types of immigration status
• To identify key questions to ask people who may be experiencing immigration issues
• To understand what practical help  you can offer and to know when to refer on and to whom you may be able to refer

Newham is home to a number of migrant populations. They are not limited to: people seeking asylum who have been placed in hotel accommodation by the home office, refugees who have arrived via resettlement schemes from countries including Afghanistan and Ukraine, international students and their spouse who have come to the UK to study, and people who have applied for EU settled status. Each group has different rights and entitlements and it is therefore essential that frontline workers are fully informed about immigration issues so that they can feel empowered to know how best to support people particularly around access to services.
