Event information

Calligraphy is considered to be one of the most important elements of Islamic art because of its essential role in transmitting the word of God in the Quran, the Muslim holy book. Literally meaning “beautiful writing,” calligraphy is a symbol of beauty and power and can found on every possible medium from manuscripts to pottery and buildings.

The Arabic script is used in calligraphy because the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Arabic. Written from right to left and containing 28 letters, its fluid style and flexibility allows it to be manipulated into a variety of shapes and styles. Among the most important and widespread are the Kufic, Naskhi and Thuluth scripts.

The workshop will be led by Soraya Syed who is a classically trained calligrapher & artist dedicated to bringing the art of Arabic calligraphy into the 21st century through film, VR, & 3-dimensional sculptures. Her pioneering work has been exhibited across Europe & the Middle East & is prized by collectors worldwide. In 2005, she became the first Briton to be awarded the ijazah from celebrated Turkish masters Hasan Çelebi and Efdaluddin Kılıç. Her practice is driven by an endless fascination with the Arabic script & its intoxicating versatility & depth of meaning. She lives and works from her studio in London.

Please note this workshop is for 18 years +
