The Coil (Intrauterine System – IUS)

The coil is a type of Long-term Acting Reversible Contraception (sometimes referred to as LARC). It is a small T- shape plastic device, placed inside your womb (uterus) by trained doctor or nurse.

How does the copper coil work?

The copper coil is similar to the progesterone coil, but instead of releasing progesterone, it releases copper which stops you from getting pregnant.

The copper coil, if inserted correctly, can last for 5 to 10 years (depending on the type), and provides up to 99% protection against pregnancy. You can get your coil removed at any time. If you change your mind, you can safely try for a baby right after your copper coil is removed by trained nurse or health professional.

The copper coil can make your periods heavier and more painful for the first three to six months after you get it fitted. You may also experience spotting or bleeding between your periods during this time. Those side effects should get better after six months. If they don’t, you may want to visit sexual health clinic to check it out as there is a small risk that your body pushed out your device or it has moved.

Does the coil stop you from getting STIs?

Remember, although the coil is very effective for stopping you from getting pregnant, it will NOT protect you from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)! The coil needs to be used at the same time as condoms to stop yourself from getting an STI.

How can I get my coil removed?

You don’t need to wait 5 years to try for a baby after your coil is fitted. If you change your mind, health professional can easily remove coil, allowing you to conceive right after it is taken out. It isn't something you can remove on your own!

Does the coil have any side effects?

The coil will most likely make your periods lighter, less painful and more regular. However, some of you may experience some side effects for some time after coil insertion. These can be:

  • short term bleeding
  • mood swings
  • skin problems
  • breast tenderness

Where can you get a coil fitted?

You can get a coil fitted at a sexual health clinic or your GP may also do it. Find your local clinic below or contact your GP for more information.
